What are FAFSA Federal School Codes?

FAFSA Federal School Codes are used to add schools of interest to your FAFSA. Each school has a six-digit code associated with it. You add this to the FAFSA in order for your application to be sent to the corresponding school.

How to Find FAFSA Federal School Codes

You have a few different options in order to identify the FAFSA Federal School Codes for the colleges you are applying to.

1) FAFSA

You can add school codes directly through the FAFSA. Once you are logged into the FAFSA, you can go to this page which will allow you to search for the Federal School Code using the school’s state, city, and name. This will bring up a list of matches and you will be able to select your school from that list.

2) Through the Federal Student Aid Website

The government has provided a list of Federal School Codes for the FAFSA. They share two options on this page, and Excel download or a PDF. Here’s a link to the PDF.

3) Web Search

While the first two are fine options, I actually prefer to search for school codes using a simple Google search. In this way, I can usually quickly identify the six-digit school code I’m looking for. Simply go to Google or another web browser and type in “SCHOOL NAME FAFSA Code.” If you do use Google, it often provides the search result you’re looking for at the top of the page.

Whichever search technique you decide to use, be sure that you do have the correct school code. There are many schools with similar names. Regardless of the search, be sure that the school you intend to apply to is what results on the FAFSA after you provide the school code.
